What is a Rheumatologist?
A Rheumatologist is a medical specialist who has completed advanced training to diagnose and manage more than 100 different types of rheumatic diseases. Their expertise includes the assessment and treatment of musculoskeletal and connective tissue conditions.
What Conditions Do Rheumatologists Treat?
Rheumatologists treat conditions such as arthritis (osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis), lupus and other autoimmune disorders, chronic pain syndromes, soft tissue injuries, and inflammatory conditions. They use a variety of techniques, including medications, physical therapy and lifestyle changes, in the course of their treatment practice.
Rheumatologists bring a unique breadth of medical expertise to their assessments. Many of the conditions they manage are chronic and affect multiple systems, requiring a deep understanding of complex interactions across the body. Because of this broad knowledge base, Rheumatologists are often called upon to provide opinions in some of the most challenging diagnostic cases.

Medico-Legal FAQ for Rheumatologists
Does an IME performed by a Rheumatologists include functional capacity testing?
No, IMEs include a very minor opinion on functional capacity and predominantly focus on the claimant’s prior medical history and the claimant’s interview with the Medical Expert. If your matter requires functional capacity, see our Plus Services for clarity. The opinion of a Rheumatologist does not replace the value of a full functional capacity evaluation in most cases. While a Rheumatologist can comment broadly on functional tolerances, they will not perform a full functional evaluation in this area.
Can I book an appointment with an Rheumatologists to treat my illness or injury with Red Health?
No, Red Health only accepts appointments with our Rheumatologists to provide medico-legal services via qualified legal practitioners. You’ll need to make an enquiry with your Primary Care Practitioner for further information on treatment.
Can an IME opinion be different from my GP?
Yes, IME opinion can be different from a treating practitioner.
An Independent Medical Evaluation is conducted to assess a particular injury, illness, or cause of incapacity. These evaluations are specific to the injury type, and the individual is examined by an expert specialising in that area. This medical expert’s assessment is separate from the opinion of a Treating General Practitioner who manages your primary healthcare. The focus and opinions of these professionals may differ.
